Agastache Blue Fortune Hyssop

Agastache Blue Fortune is an outstanding plant for a sunny border. This giant hyssop grows upright, reaching 2 to 3 feet tall, making it an ideal addition for the back of a garden bed.

Most people plant them in groups of 3 or 5 to enhance their impact in the garden.

When the foliage is crushed it smells distinctly like black licorice. Nice for some people, but a definitively distasteful smell to deer and rabbits, who will quickly move on.

Blue Fortune is one of the rare deer resistant plants that is attractive to butterflies and birds. Hummingbirds love to sample their nectar-rich blooms.

Unlike other hyssops that spread their seeds throughout garden beds, Blue Fortune is particularly valuable because it is sterile and therefore cannot seed itself. The seeds themselves are a favorite food of goldfinches.

Fun Fact

Gardeners often add Blue Fortune to their herb and vegetable gardens. The flowers and foliage have a subtle licorice-like flavor to them.  Try adding a few leaves or flowers to flavor teas, salads, or desserts.

Low Maintenance

Blue Fortune only needs a deep watering every week or two, and tolerates both heat and drought quite well once it is established. They are great plants for public plantings or in gardens where you can’t regularly attend to the plants.

Cut it back to the ground in early spring, adding last year’s flowers to this year’s compost bin.

Gardening Tips

Blue Fortune will NOT tolerate wet soil. Find a spot in full sun that drains well. When planting Blue Fortune add a handful of gravel, or small stones, to ensure the roots stay as dry as possible.

Since it reaches an impressive height, place it in the back of a garden bed with shorter plants like coneflower, milkweed and coreopsis in the front.
